Tulsa Drops a Pair on First Day of Texas A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Tulsa softball team dropped a pair of contests on the first day of the Texas A&M Invitational, falling to Iowa, 2-1, before a 7-0 setback against No. 6/8 Texas A&M on Friday.
Julia Hollingsworth reached base five times in six plate appearances on the day for the Golden Hurricane (2-4) after she walked three times in the opener and went 2-for-3 against the Aggies (7-0).
In the opener, the Hawkeyes (2-3) pushed across runs in the second and third to slip past the Hurricane, 2-1.
Iowa got on the board via an RBI-single from Sarah Kurtz, but TU got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Shannon Hughes ripped an RBI-double to left that plated Shelby Estocado.
The Hawkeyes then took the lead for good in the third on Cheyenne Pratt's two-out, run-scoring hit.
Tulsa threatened in the fifth after a pair of errors and a walk put runners on the corners with two outs, but Iowa hurler Allison Doocy escaped the jam. Doocy would retire the side in order in the sixth and seventh to close the door on the 2-1 win.
Emily Watson kept Texas A&M off the board until the bottom of the fifth, when the Aggies picked up a pair of runs, one of which was unearned, off just one hit and an error. The Aggies then got five runs on three hits against reliever Erin Harris in the sixth to open up a 7-0 lead.
Tulsa was unable to break through in the top of the seventh as Trinity Harrington closed out the win with a scoreless frame.
TU will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday against Texas A&M before a 5:15 p.m. contest against Butler.
