COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Emily Watson recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts to help Tulsa defeat Butler, 2-1, after a 6-0 setback to No. 6/8 Texas A&M on Saturday, the second day of the Texas A&M Invitational.
Watson improved to 2-2 on the season and the Golden Hurricane moved to 3-5 after the senior scattered eight hits and gave up one run against the Bulldogs (2-7) in the nightcap. Tori Stafford helped provide the offense with a 2-for-4 night at the plate with a double and an RBI, while Morgan Neal also plated a run.
Butler got its run in the bottom of the first on Alyssa Lach's RBI single for a quick 1-0 lead and that's where the score stood until Tulsa evened the ledger in the fifth.
Julia Hollingsworth reached on a fielder's choice and raced to third on Stafford's single to left. The junior came around to score on Neal's RBI grounder to make it 1-1.
In the top of the seventh, Hollingsworth ripped a one-out double down the right field line and scored on Stafford's double to deep center.
Working with a 2-1 lead, Watson picked up two more strikeouts in the bottom of the inning and got a fly ball to end the game and secure the win.
In the opener, the Aggies (9-0) scored three runs in the second and the sixth to back pitcher Lexi Smith for a 6-0 victory. Shannon Hughes went 2-for-2 for the Hurricane, but the offense was unable to break-up the shutout.
Tulsa will close play in the Texas A&M Invitational at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Iowa.
