BOCA RATON, Fla. – Emily Watson tossed a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and Julia Hollingsworth drove in the game's only run as Tulsa closed play at the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament with a 1-0 win over host Florida Atlantic on Sunday.
Watson retired the first 10 batters that she faced and after a one-out single in the fourth, she sat down the final 11 hitters for the Golden Hurricane (7-7). The stellar effort capped an impressive weekend for the senior as she went 3-0 with a pair of shutouts and 30 strikeouts against just two walks without a run allowed.
The Hurricane and Owls (7-7) combined for just three hits over the first four innings before Tulsa broke through for the game's only run in the top of the fifth.
With two outs, Jesse Smith reached on an infield single and advanced to second via a throwing error on the play. Hollingsworth then followed with a single to left that brought Smith home.
That was all that Watson needed as she retired the side in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh and closed out the game with a strikeout to improve to 5-2 on the campaign.
Tulsa will be back in action next weekend, March 2-4, at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas. TU will face Nicholls State, UT Arlington and host North Texas.
