Shug Dickson scored 29 points for her third-straight 20+ scoring performance, while two others scored in double figures for the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa's narrow 76-75 loss to Temple on Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia, Pa. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-15 on the season and 2-8 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls moved to 10-12 overall and 2-7 in the league.
After starting the game 1-of-10 from the field, including 0-for-4 from three-point range, Dickson was able to turn it around in the second half, going 10-of-13 and 3-of-4 to lead the Hurricane comeback.
"She needed to get her confidence and focus back," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "She was missing shots and didn't want to shoot, so we set her up to shoot to start the second half and even though she missed that first one she got her confidence back."
Erika Wakefield added 15 points while Kendrian Elliott totaled 10 points. Four Tulsa players had a team-best five rebounds, including Tyjae' Scales, Dickson, Rebecca Lescay and Elliott. Wakefield also had a team-best four steals and three assists.
"I am proud of how we responded in the second half," Mossman added. "We had urgency, got the game managed in the third quarter, and I like the fight in the second half. I'm proud of how we shot. We also had some unlikely heroes in Jasmine Butler who had a career-high seven points off the bench and did a good job on Tanaya Atkinson. I like the balance of our scoring and the fact that we were able to score today."
Tulsa had a 10-8 lead in assists, an 8-2 advantage in steals and a 2-1 edge in blocks, while Temple had a 42-34 lead in rebounds.
Tulsa shot 45-percent from the field, 29-percent from behind the arc and 76-percent from the free throw line, while Temple shot 39-percent from the field, 35-percent from three-point range and 74-percent from the charity stripe in the contest.
There were six tied scores and six lead changes in the first quarter, but at the end of the frame Temple had an 18-16 lead over the Hurricane. Tulsa shot a solid 41-percent from the field, but hit just 1-of-7 from behind the arc for 14-percent, while the Owls shot 42-percent from the field and 16-percent from three-point range in the first 10 minutes.
Tulsa tied the contest at 18-all on a layup by Crystal Polk to start the second quarter, but a three-pointer by Mykia Jones put the Owls ahead and they didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the frame. Temple outscored the Hurricane, 19-12, in the second quarter to take a 37-28 lead into the break.
Tulsa battled back in the third quarter, outscoring Temple, 15-10, to pull within four, 47-43, at the 5:00 mark and trailed by just two points, 54-52, at the end of the frame.
