PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Tulsa senior forward Junior Etou was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Etou averaged 17.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game in a pair of wins last week that helped vault the Golden Hurricane (13-10, 6-5) into fourth place in the league standings. He shot 52.4-percent from the floor, 55.6-percent behind the arc and 87.5 percent at the free-throw line over the two games.
The Republic of Congo native notched a double-double in both contests and he now has six on the season, with five during conference play.
Etou started the week with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead TU over SMU last Thursday night. He had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the second half against the Mustangs as the Hurricane pulled away over the final 20 minutes.
In Sunday's win at USF, Etou finished with 17 points and 12 boards and hit a crucial 3-pointer with less than a minute to play that ended any hopes of a Bulls rally. Eight of his rebounds came on the offensive end to help TU outrebound USF 44-32, including an 18-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
This is Etou's second conference Player of the Week award this season (Jan. 2, Feb. 5).
Etou and the Golden Hurricane will host Tulane (13-9, 4-6) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
