TU Follows Upset of No. 46 Drake with a Victory Against Omaha

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa (9-10) opened the day with a 4-2 upset of No. 46 ranked Drake (11-8) on Sunday morning. The Hurricane went on to defeat Omaha (9-10), 5-2, in the nightcap at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Majed Kilani, Joshua Goodger and Jarod Hing each collected two singles victories on the day.

Tulsa 4, #46 Drake 2

Tom Hands and Ben Clark knocked off the Tulsa tandem of Louis Corker and Mitchell Pritchard, 6-3, in the No. 3 doubles match.
Kilani and Baptista collected a win at the No. 2 doubles position, as they bested Ben Wood and Finley Hall, 6-3. Goodger and Hing came up big with a 7-5 victory in the No. 1 doubles match against Vinny Gillespie and Barny Thorold. The Golden Hurricane took a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Boriss Kamdem fell to Wood in the No. 6 singles match, 6-4 and 6-2. Drake tied the match at 1-1.

The No. 71 ranked Goodger claimed the opening stanza of the No. 2 singles match, 6-4, against Hands. Goodger managed to break Hands' serve in the 10th game of the second set, to tie the set at 5-5. After getting a game on serve, Goodger broke Hands once again and won the second set, 7-5. Goodger's victory put TU up, 2-1.

Clark tied the match when he defeated Baptista, 6-4 and 6-4, in the No. 4 singles position.

Hing started the No. 3 singles match with a 6-4 victory against Thorold. The two needed a tiebreaker to decide the winner of the second. Hing notched a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker, on his way to winning the second set and the match. Hing put Tulsa back on top, 3-2.

The No. 118 ranked Kilani squared off with Gillespie at the No. 1 spot. The two battled each other to a tiebreaker in the opening set, which Kilani won, 7-5. After Kilani took the first set, 7-6 (7-5), Gillespie claimed the second stanza, 6-4. Kilani was resilient as he went on to capture a 6-3, third-set victory. Kilani clinched the 4-2 upset victory over Drake.

Tulsa 5, Omaha 2
Pritchard and Corker ran away with 6-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match against Matt Dunn and Luke Moorhead. Kilani and Baptista claimed a 7-5 victory over Abdoul Ouattara and Alex Woodward at the No. 2 spot.

Razvan Grigorescu and Nathan Reekie beat Goodger and Hing, 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match. However, the Hurricane held a 1-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play.
No. 71 ranked Goodger breezed through Ouattara in the No. 2 position and captured a 6-2 victory in both sets. Goodger put Tulsa up 2-0 and improved to 11-4 on the year in dual singles matches.

Hing stormed away with a 6-0 victory in the first set of the No. 4 singles match against Dunn. Hing continued his success in the second, as he surrendered just one game in his 6-1 victory. Hing improved to 8-10 on the season for dual singles matches and put the Golden Hurricane up 3-0.

Kilani, ranked No. 118, won the first set of the No. 1 singles match against Grigorescu, 6-2. Kilani used the momentum from the first in the second, as he triumphed with the same score from the first, 6-2. Kilani clinched the match victory for the Hurricane and improved to 11-4 mark in dual singles matches.

Marko Minic bested Kamdem at the No. 6 spot, 4-6, 7-5 and 10-6. The third set was a super tiebreaker due to Tulsa having already clinched the match. Woodward knocked off Corker in the No. 5 match, 6-2, 5-7, and 10-7. These two matches made the score 4-2, in favor of TU.

Baptista claimed the first set, 7-6 (7-3), after Reekie forced a tiebreaker in the No. 3 singles match. Baptista managed to distance himself in the second, as he capitalized on a break point, for a 6-4 victory. Baptista made the final match score 5-2 and improved his record to 10-8 in dual singles competition.

With the two victories, Tulsa is now 9-10 on the season. The Golden Hurricane returns to action March 16-18, as it travels to Palm Springs, California, for the Oracle Collegiate Tennis Challenge. Match times and opponents will be announced at a later date.
