TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa football team has continued to make progress through the spring as practice No. 5 concluded Sunday night at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery has generally been pleased with the energy level and the progress through the first five practices.

"Our energy level is still good, said Montgomery. "We went back-to-back Thursday and Friday, and that's the first time we had back-to-back days of practice. I didn't think we started practice on Friday with the energy that we have had, and you kind of expect that, but, overall the practice energy increased."

After taking Saturday off, Tulsa returned to the practice field Sunday night as the Hurricane went under the lights for a two-hour workout.

"I really loved it tonight. We were under the lights.  I thought our energy was outstanding. I thought our competition was really good. There was good execution on both sides," Montgomery commented following Sunday's practice. "Our execution level is starting to come up. We're putting more things in, and the guys are really grabbing on to that and executing well. We still have a lot of work to do, but I'm really pleased with our progress and our competition level at this point."

"We're on the right track, we just have to continue to keep grinding and working hard," added Montgomery.

Montgomery has been pleased with the progress that Tulsa newcomers who joined the team at mid-semester have shown.

Generally speaking, I think our new guys are doing a good job. Obviously, they have a little more learning curve than the guys that have been here," said Montgomery. "Schematically, they have to figure out what to do and then at that point they have to be able to play fast. That's where I'm seeing more progression from them. The first day they we're kind of thinking too much, now they're starting to trigger and react. Those are positive things."

Montgomery also talked about the competition at the quarterback position for the Golden Hurricane.

"We have really good competition at quarterback right now. They're anticipating throws. They're fitting the ball in windows. A lot of that is what the defense is forcing us to do. I think our growth is on the right track to where I want it to be," said Montgomery. "We have to continue to keep getting better and better. We're not identifying everything as quickly as I want, but for the most part I'm pleased with our progress at this stage."

The Hurricane will be back on the practice field Tuesday and Thursday this week before taking next week off for Spring Break.
