WATCH COACH MONTGOMERY HERE AS HE TALKS ABOUT SPRING PRACTICE
TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa football team completed the first half of spring drills on Thursday before taking next week off for Spring Break. Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery has been pleased with the progress, energy level and competition of the Golden Hurricane through the first seven practices.
"I think we're progressing at a good rate. I'm encouraged by some of the progress we've made. I think some of our guys, especially some young guys are making some good strides, and some of our early enrollees are starting to figure it out and make more of an impact. We still have a lot of work still to do," said Montgomery.
"We can't ever be satisfied at where we are. We have to continue to press forward, and I think the mentality of our kids right now is in that mindset," said Montgomery. "I like the progress we've made, but we still have a ton of work in front of us."
The Hurricane will return to the practice field on Tuesday, March 27, after returning from Spring Break.
Montgomery indicated a few positions where the competition as been strong.
"We have a lot of competition right now at a lot of different positions," said Montgomery. "I think the competition at linebacker has been really good. Coop (Cooper Edmiston) has been doing a good job, so has Robert (Revels), Zaven (Collins), Yohance (Burnett) and Diamon (Cannon). Those guys have really competed well, and they've continued to push each other as spring ball has gone on. They've been active and physical, and understand what we want to do schematically."
"As you look at the defensive line, obviously with Jeremy Smith and Jesse Brubaker graduating, we have a lot of open competition happening there as well. Several of the new enrollees are in those spots, as well as some of our returners. The battles for those spots up front have been really good," Montgomery added.
"Offensive line-wise, Tiller (Bucktrot) has done a good job at right guard, and Chris Ivy at left tackle. Waahid (Muhammad) has had to miss a couple practices due to injury, so we'll have more competition at the left tackle spot between Waahid and Chris. We'll see how that plays out, but it's been very competitive," said Montgomery.
"At quarterback, the competition has been good. They've pushed each other," said Montgomery. "I think those guys are continuing to grow and develop. It's an area that, obviously, we have to put a lot of focus on. We've got to get better play out of our quarterbacks, and those guys understand that. They're stepping up and growing every day."
The Golden Hurricane will have eight practices remaining following Spring Break, including the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 7, at 11:00 a.m.
