FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Emily Watson struck out a season-high 15 as Tulsa closed play at the Wooo Pig Classic on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.), following a 12-1 setback against Iowa State earlier in the day.
Â
Morgan Neal collected a team-high three hits during the day, including a double and homer to pace the Golden Hurricane (18-11) on offense. Shelby Estocado also doubled and tripled in game two against the Red Flash (15-14), while Tori Stafford drove in three of the team's four runs.
Â
Tulsa got on the board in the first inning again, marking the sixth time in as many games this week that it tallied a run to start a game, with two runs for a quick 2-0 advantage. Julia Hollingsworth was hit by a pitch to open the contest and she stole second before racing home on Haley Meinen's hit. Stafford then grounded out to plate Estocado, who had reached with a walk.
Â
That would prove to be all the run support that Watson needed in the circle. The senior retired the first 10 batters that she faced before yielding a triple with one out in the fourth for the only Saint Francis hit of the afternoon.
Â
Watson recorded six of those first 10 outs via strikes and she struck out the side in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Â
Tulsa doubled its lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the top of the third. Again, Hollingsworth reached base to start the inning, this time with a walk, before Neal doubled to left. The pair would touch home on Stafford's two-out RBI single to right.
Â
From there, Watson got around the one-out triple in the fourth and retired the final 11 batters to improve to 10-4 on the campaign.
Â
In the opener, Neal recorded her first home run of the season, but Iowa State (16-15) blew open a close game late with a 10-run top of the sixth en route to a 12-1 win.
Â
Freshman pitcher Samantha Pochop allowed just two runs off five hits through the first four innings and Neal's solo homer came in the bottom of the first for the Hurricane.
Â
Tulsa will host No. 25 Oklahoma State (21-6) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21 at Collins Family Softball Complex.
