ORLANDO, Fla. – Emily Watson was perfect for 5.2 innings, but Kyra Klarkowski's first homer of the season lifted UCF to a 1-0 win over Tulsa in the American Athletic Conference opener for both squads on Friday evening at the UCF Softball Complex.
Â
Watson retired the first 17 batters that she faced for the Golden Hurricane (19-12, 0-1) before Klarkowski's blast. The senior struck out 10 batters for her eight game with double-digit strikeouts this spring. Julia Hollingsworth, Morgan Neal, Sarah Briers and Rylie Spell each singled for Tulsa.
Â
Meanwhile, Alea White earned the win in the circle to improve to 14-7 for the Knights (19-12, 1-0), who were limited to just Klarkowski's blast on offense. White allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out two in the victory.
Â
Tulsa opened the game with hits by Hollingsworth and Neal, but White snuffed out the rally with three straight outs. TU again put runners on to start the top of the second when Briers singled and Spell walked only to see White wiggle out of trouble again.
Â
The missed opportunities would come back to hurt the Hurricane.
Â
Watson rolled through the UCF lineup, needing just 70 pitches to complete her six innings of work. The Knights got just one ball out of the infield, a flyout to center field, through Watson's perfect 5.2 innings before Klarkowski's solo homer with two outs in the sixth.
Â
TU put the tying run on base with two outs in the seventh when Spell singled up the middle, but White got a pop-up to end the contest.
Â
The teams will meet for game two of the series at 1 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, March 24.
