ORLANDO, Fla. – Shelby Estocado went 2-for-4 with her team-leading sixth homer of the spring and Samantha Pochop struck out a season-high 11 batters, but UCF escaped with a 2-1 win over Tulsa on Saturday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex.
Haley Meinen helped lead the offense with a 3-for-3 outing at the plate for the Golden Hurricane (19-13, 0-2), while Sarah Briers doubled in the loss. Pochop scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run go to along with her season-best 11 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Alea White pitched the Knights (20-12, 2-0) to victory for the second straight day. White allowed eight hits and a walk along with a run and five strikeouts in seven frames to improve to 15-7 on the campaign.
Tulsa got on the board first as Estocado took a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left for a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
UCF evened the score in the second when Kyra Klarkowski tripled and scored on a throwing error. TU put two runners in scoring position when Meinen singled and Briers doubled in the fourth, but White got out of the jam with a pair of outs to keep the game tied.
The Knights would pull ahead for good in the bottom of the inning on Hayley Bejarano's two-out single that plated Aubrey Johnson.
Tulsa threatened again in the fifth, but could not break through. Morgan Neal and Estocado each singled with two outs only to see White close out the frame on a grounder. TU had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth with one out and again, White kept the visitors off the board before recording a perfect top of the seventh to close the game.
Pochop fell to 6-5 despite her stellar outing.
The teams will close the series at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday, March 25.
