ORLANDO, Fla. – Courtney Rotton's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth was the difference as UCF topped Tulsa, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series.
Shelby Estocado went 3-for-3 at the plate and Haley Meinen drove in the only run for the Golden Hurricane (19-14, 0-3). Emily Watson allowed just two hits and two walks to go along with nine strikeouts in the loss.
Meanwhile, Alea White earned her third win in as many days for the Knights (21-12, 3-0) by allowing just one run on six hits with six strikeouts.
Tulsa threatened to get on the board early as Julia Hollingsworth opened the game with a single before she moved to third on Estocado's first hit of the day. However, White got a strikeout and a grounder to end the threat.
TU left a runner in scoring position in the second and third, while Watson kept the Knights from recording a hit until a bunt single to start the fifth.
The Hurricane broke through and scored the first run of the contest in the top of the sixth. Morgan Neal and Estocado started the frame with singles before the pair moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Haley Meinen lifted a sacrifice fly to right that brought Neal home, but White limited the damage to just the one run.
In the bottom of the inning, Denali Schappacher hit seven foul balls as part of an 11-pitch plate appearance that resulted in a walk. After a flyout, Rotton lifted her two-run homer to left field that gave the home squad the 2-1 lead.
In the seventh, White retired the Hurricane in order to finish off the series sweep.
TU will be back in action at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, when it hosts ECU (15-18, 1-2) at Collins Family Softball Complex.
