TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa football squad practiced for the 11th time this spring as the Golden Hurricane had a 119-play scrimmage Saturday morning at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The Hurricane will close out spring drills next Saturday with the Annual Spring Game. Gates open at 10:30 a.m., and the game will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Chapman Stadium. The Spring Game is FREE to the public.
"I was pleased today. Our energy level was good. This was our third straight practice day, so you always worry about that, especially with the quick turnaround from yesterday's afternoon practice to a morning scrimmage. I thought our guys came out and did what I wanted them to from that standpoint," said Montgomery.
"Obviously, there's still a lot of mistakes that we still have to correct and that's what spring ball is for, what these scrimmages are for. It's gives us a chance to get it on tape. The officials are involved, you have down and distance, and guys have to think and move and create some momentum one way or the other. I'll know more after I look at it on tape and get a better feel for it, but I'm pleased walking off the field." said Montgomery.
Tulsa has four practices remaining including next Saturday's Spring Game, which will be the 15th and final spring practice session for the Hurricane.
"We still have a few things we want to get installed before the spring game, so we'll implement those next week. But, mostly I just want to see us clean up our mistakes," said Montgomery. "We have a lot of things in right now. This scrimmage is really going to highlight some of the things we did really well, and some of the things we did really bad. So, getting in to correct those this week will be important."
Montgomery and the coaching staff will use this scrimmage tape to not only correct mistakes, but better evaluate players and position battles.
"We have some really good battles going on in certain spots, and I want to see how those guys played today and see how they take what they did right and wrong and apply it next week," added Montgomery.
As far as who impressed at today's scrimmage, Montgomery said, "it's hard to pick one guy out now standing on the sidelines. I'll know more after I watch the tape. I thought Zaven (Collins) made some plays and Robert (Revels) had an interception. On offense, Cole (Neph) had a couple of nice plays, including one for a touchdown and another long play."
Montgomery also discussed the play of the quarterbacks following the first full scrimmage of the spring season.
"I want more consistency out of the quarterbacks. I thought they made some really good plays today," said Montgomery. "The receivers had some really good catches, but we had too many drops. Overall, I thought our quarterbacks played with a calmness that I want them to play with. There were a couple of plays where we were trying to force things, and we'll have to get into the film room and really correct those. They're young, but I thought they came out today and performed pretty well overall, we just have to keep on improving."
Defensively, Tulsa was without a total of 7 injured players today who started games for the Hurricane last year, including 4 that started out the season as the starter at their respective position.
"We have a lot of guys on the sidelines rehabbing. They're ahead of schedule and doing well, but the young guys are taking advantage of the reps, and I think that will allow our depth to be so much better as fall comes around," said Montgomery. "We ended up having to play a lot of guys last year, and a lot of those guys were really, really young, so it's good for them to come out and get a good scrimmage in after they've gotten a lot of work in during the spring. We've seen how they've progressed, and want to see how they're improving and getting better even more this spring."
Tulsa will practice Tuesday and Thursday this week in helmets and shoulder pads, and with helmets on Friday before closing out the spring session with Saturday's Spring Game.
