PROVIDENCE, R.I — Junior Etou was named second-team American Athletic Conference in a vote by the league's head coaches, the conference announced on Monday. Etou is the third TU player to earn all-conference honors since the Golden Hurricane joined the league prior to the 2014-15 season.
Â
Etou, who was a preseason second-team all-conference pick, leads Tulsa in scoring (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg) for the second consecutive season and he is the only player in The American to rank in the league's top five for both categories. The Republic of Congo native has scored in double-figures 26 times with seven games of at least 20 points to help TU finish fourth in the conference, outperforming its preseason prediction (8th) for the fourth consecutive season.
Â
Twice named the circuit's Player of the Week (Jan. 2 and Feb. 5), Etou produced eight double-doubles during the campaign, a league-leading seven of which came during conference action. His 8.6 rebounds per game during conference play led the league.
Â
Etou scored a season-high 30 points in Tulsa's Mayor's Cup win over Oral Roberts (Nov. 13) and he pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds against Temple (Jan. 17) and SMU (Feb. 1).
Â
Etou and the fourth-seeded Golden Hurricane (19-11, 12-6) will open play at the Aaron's American Athletic Conference Championship, held at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla., at 1 p.m. (CT) on Friday, March 9 against either Memphis or USF.
