Tulsa Drops 6-1 Decision to No. 15 Kansas

TULSA, Okla. – Vera Ploner collected the lone victory at the No. 5 singles position, 6-2, 3-6, and 7-5, as she defeated Maria Toran Ribes. Tulsa (12-3) fell to No. 15 Kansas, 6-1, Friday night at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The No. 25 ranked pair of Anastasia Rychagova and Nina Khmelnitckaia bested the TU tandem of Ksenia Laskutova and Martha Matoula, 6-1, in the No. 1 doubles match. Janey Koch and Tatiana Nikolaeva clinched the doubles point for Kansas, with a 6-3 victory against Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner, at the No. 2 doubles spot. The Jayhawks took a 1-0 lead into singles action.
Ploner won the opening set of the No. 5 singles match, 6-2 against Toran Ribes. Toran Ribes took the second set, 6-3, to force a third and deciding set. Ploner was resilient and broke Toran Ribes in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead. On her next service, Ploner capitalized and took the set, 7-5, securing her a three set victory.
Rychagova, ranked No. 3, knocked off No. 71 Laskutova, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4), in the No. 1 singles match. At the No. 2 singles position, No. 119 Despoina Vogasari bested the No. 97 ranked, Okalova, 6-3 and 6-4. Janet Koch won the No. 3 singles match against Matoula, 6-4 and 6-2. Khmelnitckaia claimed a three set victory, 4-6, 6-0 and 6-0, over Tamara Kupkova, at the No. 4 spot. Tatiana Nikolaeva needed three sets to beat Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg, 5-7, 6-3 and 10-5.
Tulsa falls to 12-3 on the season. The Golden Hurricane returns to the Case Tennis Center for a matchup with the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sunday, March 11. First serves are scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
