Golden Hurricane Tames Tigers in American Quarterfinals

DALLAS, Texas – The Tulsa women's tennis team (19-5) opened the American Athletic Conference Tournament with a quarterfinal victory against the Memphis Tigers (16-8), 4-1, Thursday, at SMU's Turpin Stadium. Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe picked up singles and doubles victories for the Golden Hurricane.
Memphis opened doubles play with a victory in the No. 3 match, as Josephine Cao and Hanna Sohn bested Tamara Kupkova and Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg, 6-2.
Poppe and her partner, Vera Ploner, tied the doubles action when they defeated Katherine Cao and Anki Wind, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot. Matoula and Ksenia Laskutova claimed a 7-5 victory against Laura Bente and Alisha Reayer, at the No. 1 position. The Hurricane held the lead, 1-0, as the match headed to singles play.
Martina Okalova shutout Sohn, 6-0, in the first stanza of the No. 2 singles match. Okalova rolled to a 6-3 second-set victory. Okalova improved to 12-4 on the season in dual matches and extended the TU lead to 2-0.
The Tigers pulled within one, 2-1, after Katherine Cao won two sets, 6-1 and 6-4, against Ploner in the No. 5 position.
Poppe stormed away with a 6-0 victory against Sullivan at the No. 6 spot. Poppe claimed the second set, 7-6, after she took the tiebreaker, 7-4. Poppe has an overall dual match record of 7-1, but more importantly she put the Hurricane on top, 3-1.
Matoula won the first set of the No. 4 match against Reayer, 6-4. Matoula matched the score in the second, 6-4, as she claimed the two-set victory against Reayer. Matoula clinched the match for TU, 4-1, and improved to 13-4 in dual matches.
With the victory, Tulsa is now 19-5 on the year. The Golden Hurricane returns to action on Friday, April 20, as it battles the No. 34 ranked Wichita State Shockers in the American semifinals. First serves are scheduled for 3 p.m.
