Tulsa Rowing Hosts Creighton in 11th Annual Lawless Cup

4/20/2018 10:52:00 AM | Rowing

The Tulsa rowing team will host Creighton in the 11th edition of the Lawless Cup on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest located on the Verdigris River in Catoosa, Okla.

The two teams will race three races, including the Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+, beginning at 9:00 am and concluding around 9:40 am.

"The Lawless Cup is a really important regatta for us," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "We are excited to host Creighton because they are a great team and we've been long time competitors.  The Lawless Cup is one of our oldest regattas and named after TU President Emeritus Dr. Robert Lawless.  Dr. Bob instituted rowing as a sport at TU and he will be in attendance this year to award the cup to the Varsity 8+ winner.  The weather doesn't look great, but we look forward to hosting and having Hurricane Nation come out and support us."

The Lawless Cup Regatta was established in 2005 to recognize the outstanding contributions that TU President Emeritus Dr. Robert Lawless and his wife, First Lady Emeritus Marcy Lawless, made toward the success of the Tulsa women's rowing program.

Since the inception of the Lawless Cup, TU has gone undefeated in Cup races, bringing home the trophy in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.  The official Lawless Cup, which has become a celebrated tradition for TU, the women's rowing program and the many fans that come to cheer on the Golden Hurricane along the banks of the beautiful Verdigris River, is presented to the winner of the Varsity 8+ race.  The trophy was donated by the Sue Casey (1999-2003) family.

In the first five years, TU defeated Creighton, however the 2012, 2013 and 2015 Lawless Cup regattas were against SMU, while the 2014 regatta was won against both Creighton and SMU, and the 2016 cup was won against SMU and Central Oklahoma.
