STILLWATER, Okla. — Rylie Spell's fifth homer of the season broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth and put Tulsa ahead for good as the Golden Hurricane defeated Oklahoma State, 7-4, to sweep the season series on Wednesday night at Cowgirl Stadium.

Tori Stafford went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Golden Hurricane (23-14), who now have won 11 of the last 12 matchups with the Cowgirls (25-11). Shelby Estocado also had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Shannon Hughes went 2-for-3 with a double.

In the circle, reigning Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Pitcher of the Week Emily Watson allowed four unearned runs and struck out nine to improve to 14-6 on the season.

Tulsa got on the board first in the top of the first when Julia Hollingsworth dropped an infield single just in front of the plate. OSU catcher Mackenzie Thomas' attempt to get the speedy Hollingsworth at first base went down the right field line and Hollingsworth raced to third. Estocado then lifted a sacrifice fly deep to right that plated the junior for a quick 1-0 lead.

The Hurricane then extended the cushion to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the third.

Hughes started the inning with a walk and after a single from Mikayla Whitten, she came around to score on a grounder from Hollingsworth. Estocado doubled home Whitten and Stafford legged out an infield single to plate Estocado to cap the scoring.

Watson kept the Cowgirls lineup off balance and needed just five pitches to retire the side in the bottom of the fourth.

However, Oklahoma State broke through with four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score. Two runs scored on an error before Madi Sue Montgomery lifted a two-run homer to make it 4-4.

Spell started the top of the sixth with her solo homer to reclaim the lead, and momentum, for the Hurricane. TU would load the bases on a pair of singles and a walk with two outs for Stafford, who dumped a two-run hit to right to push the advantage to 7-4.

That's where the score stood going in to the bottom of the seventh. Watson got the first two batters to fly out before OSU brought the tying run to the plate with a pair of infield singles. But Watson ended all hopes of a comeback with her ninth strikeout to close out the squad's 23rd victory of the spring.

Tulsa will return to the diamond for a three-game, American Athletic Conference series at Wichita State (21-12, 4-2). Game one of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 6 from Wilkins Softball Complex.
