Tulsa’s Varsity 8+ Earns Top Mark in First Day at Sunshine State Invitational

Tulsa's Varsity 8+ earned a first-place finish, while the 2nd Varsity 8+ was second and the Varsity 4+ was third in the first day of racing at the Sunshine State Invitational. The two-day regatta is hosted at the Nathan Benderson Rowing Center in Sarasota, Fla., and will conclude tomorrow.
"I am really pleased with the way the team went about racing today," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "The team was relaxed and focused, and really did what we wanted them to do in terms of executing the race plan. Today was about racing for lane assignments tomorrow, and every crew here is great so we are looking forward to really racing hard as every team will go after it tomorrow."
Sam Barber, Helen Leigh, Ellie Russell, Lucy Coleman, Veronique Ulrich, Lauren Vander Hoeven, Paige Hallam, Sophia Camara and Hannah Vissers raced the Varsity 8+ to a first-place finish in a time of 6:26.90. TU finished more than five seconds faster than UCF (6:32.36), which finished in second place, and nine seconds faster than Clemson (6:35.95) in third place.
In the 2nd Varsity 8+, the Golden Hurricane boat, which consisted of Eva Trabucco, Alessia Ruggiu, Madeline Lyons, Elisa Vandersloot, Elizabeth McCabe, Kristy Covre, Taylah Eder, Sydney Pirkle and Madeline Oleksiak, turned in a second-place time of 6:43.33, just under two seconds behind Clemson (6:41.50).
Lindsey Smith, Mikala Burns, Emily Williams, Daniela Fusco-House and Nicole Workman posted a third-place time of 7:31.32 in the Varsity 4+, while Tulsa's 2nd Varsity 4+ was sixth with a time of 7:58.81 in their race.
