WICHITA, Kan. – Shelby Estocado homered and drove in three runs to help Tulsa jump out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 9-3 win at Wichita State on Saturday evening at Wilkins Stadium, in the first conference matchup between the programs since 1996.
The homer was the team-leading seventh for Estocado, as the Golden Hurricane (24-14, 4-3) won its fourth consecutive American Athletic Conference game and took the inaugural Havoc in the Heartland softball contest. Haley Meinen and Mikayla Whitten each recorded a pair of doubles, while Emily Watson improved to 15-6 with 11 strikeouts in the victory.
As it has for much of the season, TU jumped ahead with runs in the first inning, this time with four in the opening frame. Julia Hollingsworth dropped down a bunt single before Estocado deposited a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right field for a 2-0 advantage. Hits by Tori Stafford and Meinen, followed by a walk to Rylie Spell loaded the bases.
The score moved to 4-0 after Sarah Briers singled to bring in a run and a fielder's choice off the bat of Shannon Hughes brought home another.
In the fourth, Hughes started the frame with a walk before Whitten doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Hollingsworth made it 5-0 with an infield single and Estocado brought home another run to extend the cushion to 6-0.
However, the Shockers (21-13, 4-3) got two runs back in the fifth when Madison Perrigan hit a two run homer, but TU put the game away with three more runs in the top of the 6th.
Meinen hit a two-run double and Stafford brought the junior home with a single to right to make it 9-2.
Wichita State scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Watson closed out the contest with a flyout.
The teams will meet for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
