Tulsa Gets 49-25 Win at Tulane

New Orleans, La. -- The Tulsa offense scored 28 points in the second half and the Hurricane defense shut down the nation's leading rusher Matt Forte while posting a 49-25 victory in front of 15,271 fans at the Louisiana Superdome.
Tulsa improved to 6-3 on the season and 4-2 in league play, setting up a showdown next weekend in Tulsa with the C-USA West-leading Houston Cougars. Tulane dropped to 2-7 and 1-4 on the season.
The Hurricane scored the first 14 points of the game, then Tulane scored 21 of the game's next 28 points cutting the Hurricane lead to 21-18 in the third period. Tulsa then put together four straight scoring drives in the second half for a 49-18 lead with less then two minutes to play in the game.
It was Tulsa's freshman red-shirt running back Jamad Williams who stole the show in the run game as he gained 153 yards on 31 carries, while Tulsa's defense held Tulane's Matt Forte, the nation's leading rusher with 192.4 yards, to just 103 yards.
The Hurricane offense out up its third game this year with 600 yards of total offense, as Paul Smith completed 18-of-27 passes for 319 yards for his ninth straight game of throwing or more than 300 yards.
Tulane recovered an onside kick to open the second half and proceeded to march 56 yards to cut Tulsa's lead to three points, 21-18. The Green Wave scored on a two-yard run by Anthony Scelfo, and added a two-point conversion.
Paul Smith marched the Hurricane down the field, going 60 yards in six plays, as he ran over from one-yard out for the scoring, giving the Hurricane a 10-point lead, 28-18, at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter.
After a defensive stop, the Tulsa offense took a 17-point lead on a Smith six-yard pass to Kyle Grooms as the Hurricane traveled 80 yards in 11 plays for a 35-18 lead.
Tulsa added two more TDs as Smith connected with Trae Johnson on a 37-yard TD pass, and AJ Whitmore raced 56 yards with 1:41 left for the 29-18 lead. Tulane added a late touchdown to close out the scoring.
The first half ended in a flurry, as 17 points were scored in the final 1:11. After another Tulane takeaway, Tulsa's third turnover of the game, Tulane wasted little time cutting into Tulsa's lead as Scelfo threw 44 yards to Brian King, capping a five-play, 83-yard drive in just 1:20, scoring at the 1:11 mark.
Tulsa's Roy Roberts took his first-ever kickoff return attempt 92 yards for a touchdown moving its lead to 21-7 with 0:59 left in the opening half. But Tulane would not let time run out. The Green Wave went 52 yards in nine plays and settled for a 34-yard field goal as the teams went into halftime 21-10.
The Hurricane went over the 300-yard mark in the first half for the fifth time this season, gaining 338 yards, while Tulane had 240 total yards.
After suffering two first-quarter turnovers, the Hurricane scored the first points in the game on a Paul Smith four-yard run at the 2:49 mark of the first period. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive in just 1:54.
Tulsa went ahead 14-0 at the 9:03 mark of the second quarter when Smith found Brennan Marion in the end zone for a 52-yard touchdown reception, capping a 95-yard, nine-play drive.
Tulsa returns home next week to close out the home season against the Houston Cougars. Game time is scheduled for 2:05 pm.
