STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to No. 4 Ohio State in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship Round of 16 Thursday at the Taube Tennis Stadium Courts.
The No. 36-ranked Golden Hurricane (21-8) was unable to pull the upset over the highly-ranked Buckeyes (33-2) after the team advanced to the first Round of 16 in school history.
"We set a goal in the beginning of the season that we wanted to reach the Round of 16, and we were able to achieve that goal this year," Tulsa head coach Vince Westbrook said. "I'm very proud of how we battled today, but we just didn't have enough against a very good Ohio State team."
"We return the core of our team next year, and I expect us to be able to build on this season."
OSU took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning a close doubles point.
The sophomore tandem of Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson fell 8-3 at the third doubles position to Blaz Rola and Balazs Novak.
Tulsa drew even after the No. 24-ranked team of junior Ashley Watling and sophomore Clifford Marsland upset No. 21 Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt 8-6 at the top of the lineup. They picked up an early break and held serve the rest of the way.
Ohio State won the doubles point after sophomore Marcelo Arevalo and freshman Japie De Klerk lost to No. 81 Chase Buchanan and Shuhei Uzawa 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
Tulsa fell behind 2-0 after No. 62 De Klerk lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to No. 10 Chase Buchanan.
OSU put TU on the brink of elimination after No. 99 Marsland lost 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles to No. 50 Allare.
The Buckeyes took the team competition after Jackson lost 6-2, 6-4 to No. 111 Novak at the bottom of the lineup.
The other three matches on court were abandoned, and TU was leading two of them.
No. 27-ranked Arevalo was ahead of No. 4 Rola 6-4, 2-5 at the top of the order, and Ive was leading No. 65 Devin McCarthy 7-6 (8-6), 2-3 from the fifth position. McCarthy held three set points in the first-set tiebreak, but Ive battled back and was able to capture the opening set.
No. 88 Watling lost the opening set 5-7 to No. 107 Ille Van Engelen on the third court, but he was leading 3-0 in the second set before the match was abandoned.
The team completed its record-breaking season, but four members of the Golden Hurricane will remain in Stanford for the singles and doubles championships.
Arevalo earned Conference USA's automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship, and De Klerk is currently the third alternate in the field of 64. The singles championship will begin May 25.
Watling and Marsland earned Conference USA's automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship. The doubles championship will begin May 26.
