WICHITA, Kan. — Corey Henderson Jr. led all scorers with 28 points, but No. 17 Wichita State withstood a Tulsa rally in the second half and pulled away for a 90-71 win on Sunday night at Charles Koch Arena.
Henderson Jr. went 7-of-15 from the field, hit five 3-pointers and went a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line for the Golden Hurricane (11-10, 4-5). The senior scored 22 points in the second half, when he went 5-of-10 from the floor. Junior Etou neared a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Sterling Taplin added a dozen points and five assists.
Meanwhile, Austin Reaves scored a career-high 23 points in the first half and Shaquille Morris had 20 points to pace the Shockers (17-4, 7-2). Wichita State shot 47.1-percent from the field and had another 15 points off the bench from Darral Willis Jr.
The Shockers stretched a 10-point halftime lead to 19 in the opening minutes of the second half with a 9-0 run. However, TU responded with a 17-3 spurt that closed the gap to 57-52 with 12:45 to play.
Henderson Jr. scored 10 points during the stretch that started with a Taplin layup. Taplin also hit three free throws and Etou scored inside to get the visitors back in the game. After WSU extended the cushion back to 10 with four straight free throws, Henderson Jr. and Etou hit back-to-back triples to get TU within 64-60.
A pair of Igbanu free throws made it 66-62 with just 7:48 left, but the Shockers pulled away with a 17-2 run over the next five minutes en route to the 90-71 final.
After Wichita State got on the board first to start the game, Tulsa went on an 8-0 spurt and the visitors would lead for much of the opening half. Etou got the Hurricane started with a 3-pointer and TU would hit six of its first 10 attempts behind the arc.
TU used those 3-pointers to thwart the Shockers' attempts for a comeback, but Reaves hit his first seven triples en route to a career-high 23 first-half points to fuel Wichita State. Reaves led the Shockers on a 16-2 run that gave the home squad a 41-29 lead.
Etou scored twice in the final 90 seconds of the half, but the Shockers took a 45-35 advantage to halftime.
The Hurricane will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, when it hosts SMU (15-7, 5-4) at the Reynolds Center.
