2019 Tulsa Rowing Foreign Tour - Blog Entry #1

The Tulsa rowing team is off on an 18-day foreign tour to Venice, Italy, Bled, Slovenia, and Henley on Thames, England. The team will have some fun, as well as practice and compete in the Bled International Regatta (June 14-16) and Henley Women's Regatta (June 21-23). To document their adventure, six different rowers will blog about a three-day time period.

Up first is Madison Bickle, a sophomore from Catoosa, Okla., on the first three days (June 8-10).

We're doing it! The trip we've been excited about the entire year (for some, many years) is finally here. After hours spent traveling, we are now enjoying endless pasta and gelato in beautiful Venice, Italy.

For a few people on the team, this trip is their first time abroad. For others, Europe is home. The vibrant colors and busy canals of the city are sure to impress anyone nonetheless. Venice seems to be one huge maze. The streets and canals wind around the entire city, with different bridges, shops and restaurants lining the way. Pizzerias and bakeries appear on every street, and we aren't complaining!

Perhaps the most amazing sights are those seen in history books and magazines. It's difficult to not stop every 10 feet to take a new picture. We try to take each moment in, but a camera just can't do it justice! Gondolas pass by one another on the canals (some of which have singers & accordion players), fresh pasta is sold along the streets, and St. Mark's Basilica is stunning! The church was lined with gold and mosaic tiles from top to bottom. Some people got to make offerings and light candles for the church - it was very special.

For now, our feet are tired after walking 10 miles and our bellies are full of carbs. Venice was fun, but now we're off to Slovenia! Ciao!
