Tulsa Women Drop 68-46 Decision to Temple

2/17/2021 4:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 68-46 decision to Temple on Wednesday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.  The Golden Hurricane fell to 5-10 on the season and 4-10 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls moved to 9-8 overall and 9-5 in the league.

"It was pretty typical of what we've done this season offensively," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "We scored 46 points and shot 28-percent, but the difference was we've been guarding better than that.  The first four points were on offensive rebound put-backs and that put us back on our heels.  A typical offensive night for us, but we didn't get it done on defense."

Maddie Bittle had a team-best 10 points, while Maya Mayberry added eight, and both Jessika Evans and Wyvette Mayberry scored six.  Desiree Lewis pulled down six rebounds, Maya Mayberry and Bittle both had three assists, and Bittle had three steals.

"Maddie Bittle was a spark and a bright spot offensively, and Kayla Moutry was a bright spot defensively," Mossman said.  "Kayla took two charges in 17 minutes of play and we have a lot of other players that haven't taken one all season."

Tulsa had an 8-5 advantage in steals, while Temple had a 43-32 lead in rebounds, a 15-11 edge in assists and a 5-0 advantage in blocks.

Temple had a 40-16 lead in points in the paint and an 11-5 advantage in second chance points, while Tulsa had an 18-11 lead in points off the bench.

Temple jumped out to an 11-2 lead at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter, forcing the Golden Hurricane to call a timeout.  Maddie Bittle ended TU's scoring drought that spanned 3:13 off the clock on a layup at the 4:47 mark for a 13-4 score, but the Owls outscored the Hurricane, 11-7, to end the first frame up 24-11.  Temple hit 66-percent of their field goal attempts in the first 10 minutes, while Tulsa was just 3-of-18 for 16.7-percent.

In the second quarter, Temple had an 18-9 scoring edge to own a 42-20 advantage at halftime.  The Owls' second quarter points (18) nearly equaled the Hurricane's points in the half (20).

Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter, giving Temple a 55-33 lead with one quarter to play.  The Owls had a game-best 28-point lead three times in the third quarter, including a 54-26 advantage with 3:24 on the clock, but Tulsa cut it to 22 as Jessika Evans hit a three-pointer with 15-seconds remaining in the frame.

Both teams also scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but the Owls claimed the 22-point win.

Temple was led by two players with double-doubles, including a team-best 18 points and 10 rebounds by Alexa Williamson, while Mia Davis had 17 points and 10 boards.  Jasha Clinton added 12 points.

Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, February 20 at UCF.  Game time is set for 11:00 am Central in Orlando.
