Tulsa senior men's soccer player Jake McGuire was drafted by the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer in today's MLS SuperDraft. McGuire was the eighth pick in the second round and 30th overall selection.
McGuire is TU's 22nd men's soccer player to play professionally and 14th to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft or Supplemental Draft.
"Jake has been a big part of us winning three championships in the last three years," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "He is certainly one of the best shot stoppers in the country, he is good with his feet and has all the tools to be a successful pro. Jake has an excellent work ethic. He shows up every day ready to work and he learned to compete, and to compete better on a day-to-day basis in his four years at TU. He is a very diligent and responsible person, and was successful in the classroom as well so he has a lot of great qualities."
A goalkeeper from Chino Hills, Calif., McGuire played all 1,905 minutes of the 2016 season in goal, picked up 63 saves and had six shutouts on the year. He recorded a 1.09 goals-against average and a 73.3 saves percentage this year.
McGuire was selected to the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division I Men's Soccer All-East Region third team. He picked up American Athletic Conference second team accolades, was tabbed to The American All-Tournament Team and was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of The American Championship this season.
McGuire concluded his career with 17 career clean sheets for the most in school history (dating back to 1996). He also ended his career ranked first in minutes played, with just over 6,360, and in games played with 67, and is second with 245 saves, trailing Brent Salter (1999-2002) who has the most with 261.
