In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Tulsa handed seventh-ranked Cincinnati a 69-61 loss. It marked just the fifth time in school history that the Hurricane has defeated a team ranked among the top-seven in the Associated Press poll. The highest-ranked team Tulsa has defeated was Louisville, 84-77, on Feb. 8, 1975. Tulsa defeated fifth-ranked UCLA, 77-76 in overtime in the 1996 preseason NIT. The Hurricane also defeated two seventh-ranked teams, Wichita State in Jan. 19863 and Michigan in Dec. 1965.
