Jan. 22, 2001

Tulsa, Okla. - University of Tulsa forward Kevin Johnson has been named the Western Athletic Conference's men's basketball player of the week, as announced by the league office today.

Johnson, a sophomore from Missouri City, Texas (HCYA), averaged 22.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks in wins over TCU and UTEP last week.

Johnson scored a career-best 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks against TCU. He was 10-of-18 from the field and 10-of11 from the free throw line. His eight blocks was one shy of tying the school record, while his 30 points was the first 30+scoring game for a Tulsa player since the 1996-97 season.

At UTEP, he scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 17 minutes due to foul trouble. For the week, Johnson was 16-of-29 (.552) from the field and 12-of-16 (.750) from the free throw line.

The WAC weekly honor is the first for Johnson in his two-year career, and marks the first time this season that a Tulsa player has earned the award.
