Grand Prairie, Texas - The second day of the UTA/Izusu Classic in Grand Prairie, Texas, went much better for the TU softball team than the first day. The Hurricane won two of three contests, earning a spot in the consolation bracket semifinals.
The day started with a game against Bethune Cookman, a team that Tulsa has not lost to in three previous meetings. Scoring once in the first three innings was all of the run production junior Jenny Magill needed as she threw a complete game giving up only two unearned runs in a 3-2 TU win. Again TU utilized the long ball as sophomore Danielle Olsen hit her third home run of the season and freshman Monica Chana also went deep.
The victory earned TU the right to play defending national champion Oklahoma in the second round of bracket play. After holding the Sooners scoreless in the first inning, senior Ann Mesman took a 3-1 pitch deep to give the Hurricane a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. That is when the wheels fell off for TU. The Sooners scored seven in the second inning, added three more in the third and seven more in the fourth for a 17-1 run-rule victory. Mesman finished the game 2-2 for Tulsa.
In the nightcap, Tulsa faced the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio. UTSA struck first with a run in the top of the second inning. However, TU answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Magill pitched her second complete game of the day, striking out 11 and picking up the 5-3 win for TU. Sophomore Brandi McGuire, senior Jessee Ayala and Chana all went 2-3 from the plate for the Hurricane.
Tulsa would have played Houston in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, with the winner facing Illinois-Chicago for the consolation championship. However, rainy weather on Sunday morning and chilly temperatures hindered play. Tournament officials called the tournament before any play could begin.
