Stillwater, Okla. - Mother Nature tried her best to rain out TU's weekend on the softball diamond, but persistance paid off as the Golden Hurricane split a pair of games at the revised OSU Cowgirl Classic.
Heavy rains on Friday and Saturday had forced the tournament to be postponed with several games being lost. However, the sun came out on Sunday and so did the softball teams.
Tulsa had revenge on its mind in the first game, as the Hurricane faced the Bluejays of Creighton. CU had defeated Tulsa, 1-0 in 10 innings, in the OU/Adidas Classic only one week earlier.
Both teams scored a run apeice in the second inning to erase the possibility of a repeat score. After senior Ann Mesman walked to lead off the bottom half of the inning with a walk, she was sacrificed to second by Brandi McGuire. Fellow senior Jessee Ayala followed a strikeout with a walk, then sophomore Christy Watkins singled down the rightfield line to score Mesman from second to tie the game.
Ufortunately, for the Hurricane that would be its only run. Creighton rallied for four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. The Bluejays also got an insurance home run in the seventh to seal the deal.
Watkins was the big stick for TU, going 3-for-3 with an RBI in her role as the designated player.
The second game was much better for the Hurricane. Junior Jenny Magill pitched her fourth complete game of the season in a 4-2 TU victory. She struck out four and allowed only one earned run, a third-inning homerun.
TU picked up a run in the top of the first inning as senior Kari Curtis lead off the game with a single to right center. She was sacrificed over to second by freshman Heather Hiar and went to third on a single by sophomore Danielle Olsen. Curtis would later score on a fielding error by the shortstop.
SMS took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Jami Canada led the inning off with a walk. She would later score on a throwing error by TU's Monica Chana. But the lead did not last long as TU tied the game in the next half inning. Curtis picked up her second hit of the game, then advanced to third on a throwing error by the SMS pitcher. She would even score on an error, this time a throwing error by the Bears' first baseman, one batter later.
Tulsa took the lead for good in the top of the seventh after freshman A.J. Morris led the inning off with a double to left center, her first hit of the season. Curtis reached base for the third time in the game on a fielding error by the shortstop, while Morris advanced to third. Following an intentional walk to Olsen to load the bases, Mesman popped up to second base. But the fielder could not handle the ball, allowing Morris to score. Chana attoned for her fielding miscue earlier, by beating the throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt. The bunt allowed Curtis to score her third run of the game.
With the win Magill is 4-3 on the season, having all four of TU's wins. Tulsa is 4-7 on the season and will travel to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge on March 2-4.
