Box Score

Lawrence, Kan. - The Golden Hurricane softball team scored three runs in the first inning then held on for a 4-3 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks in the 2001 Holiday Inn Invitational at Lawerence, Kan., on Saturday.

Senior Kari Curtis, the teams leading hitter, provided the spark with a double to start the game. It was one of two hits for the centerfielder from Stillwater, Okla. She would also add a run and one RBI later in the contest.

The Hurricane had two extra-base hits, with fellow senior Jessee Ayala also hitting a double in the first inning that scored TU's third senior, Ann Mesman, from second.

Thanks to the three run outburst in the first, junior Jenny Magill picks up her fifth win of the season. With five victories this season, she moves into third place on the TU all-time chart for career victories. She is now only five behind the current career win holder, Kerri Bartholomew (1993-96).

Sophomore Amy Van Huss also picked up a save after pitching four innings with six strikeouts.

The Hurricane, 5-17 on the season, will face Western Michigan on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., then will play either the consolation game or the championship game later that afternoon.
