Softball Wins Home Opener Over Oklahoma State

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, winning its home opener over Oklahoma State 3-0 at the Charles Page High School Softball Complex. The largest crowd to ever watch a TU home game of 457 witnessed the Golden Hurricane's seventh win of the season.

Senior Kari Curtis led off TU's first inning with a walk then stole second. She went to third on freshman Heather Hiar's infield hit. When fellow freshman Lauren Capriotti hit a single up the middle, TU took the lead for good as Curtis scored from third. A Brandi McGuire single scored Hiar later in the inning.

The Hurricane got an insurance run from Capriotti in the third as she hit her second homerun of the season to rightfield. Senior Ann Mesman hit a double on the next pitch that hit the top of the fence and bounced back on the field. That chased OSU ace Sarah Knife Chief, after only two batters in the third inning.

Junior pitcher Jenny Magill recorded her third shutout of the season, raising her school-record career total to 10 shutouts. She pitched a complete-game, seven innings, striking out five and scattering three hits. At one point, she retired 15 consecutive OSU hitters. The win improved her record to 6-7 on the season, during the 2000 campaign, she won only five games all year.

Knife Chief picked up the loss, falling to 5-2 on the season. Tulsa improves to 7-18 on the season, winning three of its last four games including two wins over Big 12 opponents. Oklahoma State falls to 15-10 on the year.

The Golden Hurricane will no travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for the New Mexico State Invitational on March 23-25.
