Softball Team Splits in Day Two Action at NMSU Invitational

Las Cruces, N.M. - The University of Tulsa softball team won its first game of the day against Texas-San Antonio, but could not overcome #15 Oregon State in its second game of the day, losing 6-1, at the New Mexico State Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
The UTSA game was a rubber game, as it was the third time this season the two teams had faced each other. Both teams winning once, including a 2-1 UTSA victory on Friday. The Hurricane sjummped on the Roadrunners pitching early and did not look back, as TU scored six runs in the first three innings, including four in the third inning alone.
Sophomore Brandi McGuire had the big bat for TU going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs. She also recorded 10 putouts on defense. Senior Jessee Ayala, sophomore Danielle Olsen and freshman Heather Hiar all had multi-hit games as well for TU, contributing two hits apeice. The Hurricane recorded a season high 13 hits and 11 runs off two UTSA pitchers.
Junior Jenny Magill picked up her seventh win of the season, improving her record to 7-8.
The second game of the day did not go as well for the Hurricane, as they lost to the 15th nationally ranked Beavers of Oregon State. OSU scored twice in the first inning off of TU starter Amy Van Huss, then added insurance runs in the third, fourth and seventh for the 6-1 victory.
Tulsa picked its only run up in the seventh, as Olsen led the inning off with a single. Two batters later, McGuire hit her third double of the day, advancing Olsen to third. She would score on an Ayala ground out back to the pitcher. Senior Kari Curtis did extend her hitting streak to five games, she has has at least one hit in seven of the last eight contests.
Sophomore Amy Van Huss picked up the loss. Her record now stands at 2-10 on the year. Tulsa falls to 9-20, while Oregon State improves to 24-10 and Texas-San Antonio falls to 20-17.
The Hurricane will conclude the tournament on Sunday morning with another game against Oregon State at 10 a.m., followed by a 12 p.m. contest with New Mexico State. Tulsa stands in second place in the tournament standings with a 2-2 record. OSU leads the round-robin play with a 4-0 mark, while NMSU and UTSA have identical 1-3 records.
