Softball Team Loses Two Games at the NMSU Invitational

Las Cruces, N.M. - The University of Tulsa softball team lost its final two games of the New Mexico State Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. The first game of the day was a 5-1 setback at the hand of #15 Oregon State. The second loss came from host New Mexico State, 7-1.

Senior Kari Curtis recorded two of Tulsa's five hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore Danielle Olsen garnered the Hurricane's lone score, with a home run in the second inning. The run actually tied the game at 1-1. OSU would go on to score in the bottom half of the inning and hold on for the 5-1 victory.

Sophomore Amy Van Huss was saddled with the loss. She falls to 2-11 on the season. The loss is the Hurricane's eighth of the season, to a team ranked in the top-25.

The second game was a defensive struggle for most of the contest. The Aggies scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first. However, TU got one run back in the top half of the second. Two batters after senior Jesse Ayala doubled to start the second, sophomore Kyla Malone singled throught the right side, scoring Ayala from third.

The Aggies would pick up another run in the fourth and put the game on ice with four runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin, 7-1. NMSU got some revenge on TU as the Hurricane had defeated the Aggies, 2-1, earlier in the tournament.

Curtis extended her hitting streak to nine consecutive games with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Malone and freshman Lauren Capriotti also recorded two hits in the contest.

Tulsa now stands at 9-22 on the season. The Hurricane will now travel to Wichita, Kan., for an April 4 meeting with Wichita State. The Wednesday contest is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The next home game for TU is April 10th against Southwest Missouri State at 3 p.m.
