Softball Team Drops Two in 2001 Border War

Stillwater, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team suffered three more setbacks on Wednesday, two in the loss column and one on the field. Tulsa lost 10-1 to Arkansas and 6-3 to Oklahoma State in the 2001 Border War held at the OSU Cowgirl Softball Field in Stillwater, Okla.

Against Arkansas, Tulsa allowed 10 runs on 11 hits with seven of the runs being earned. Junior Jenny Magill started the game, but left after taking a line drive off the left side of her chest in the second inning.

The Hurricane did mange a run in the third inning, as sophomore Christy Watkins led the inning off with her third double of the season. Freshman A.J. Morris then recorded her seventh hit of the season to give TU two baserunners with no one out. Watkins then scored on Kari Curtis' fielders choice. Freshman Lauren Capriotti singled in the second inning for TU's first and only other hit of the game.

Morris also injured her left arm diving for a foul ball in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Preliminary indications say she will may miss the next two weeks.

The second game started better for the Hurricane, as TU took a 2-0 lead into the bottom half of the second inning. Senior Ann Mesman recorded a lead off walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fellow senior Jessee Ayala hit a single to right field, advancing Mesman to third base. Sophomore Brandi McGuire then hit a bases-clearing double over the centerfielder's head that went to the wall. Freshman Morgan McCarly was hit by a pitch, followed by a wild pitch advancing both McCarly and McGuire. However, the Hurricane could not capitailize on the momentum ending the inning with a strikeout and a ground out.

Oklahoma State scored once in the bottom of the second, then exploded for four runs in the third for a 5-2 lead. Tulsa was able to get one run back in the top of the fourth inning as Ayala walked to start the inning. After a stolen base and a ground out, she scored on a wild pitch.

The Cowgirls added an insurance run in the sixth inning for the final margin of 6-3. Tulsa falls to 10-27 on the season. Arkansas, who defeated OSU in the day's first game, 3-0, improves to 26-22. The Cowgirls are 20-17.

Tulsa opens Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Loyola Marymount. The series is scheduled to start at noon, at the Charles Page High School Softball Field in Sand Springs, Okla. TU also hosts LMU on Monday to close out the four game series.
