Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball squad dropped a pair of Western Athletic Conference games to Loyola Marymount University on Saturday afternoon, 3-0 and 6-3, at the Charles Page High School Softball Field.
The Lions broke open a scoreless tie in the first game with three unearned runs in the fifth inning. The Hurricane managed one hit for the contest, by senior Kari Curtis in the third inning. She also recorded her 11th stolen base of the season as well.
Junior Jenny Magill recorded six strikeouts in seven innings while allowing the three unearned runs. Defensively, the Hurricane got the best of the WAC's leading baserunner, Anna Truernicht of LMU. Having only been thrown out twice this season, TU catcher Ann Mesman threw Truernicht out in the third inning in an attempt to steal second base.
The second game did not start well for the Hurricane, as LMU scored an unearned run to start the game. TU would strand the first of its seven runners, at third base in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Lauren Capriotti was the big bat going 2-for-3 on the game. Sophomore Brandi McGuire hit her second home run of the season in the sixth inning, a shot over the left field fence.
The Hurricane outhit LMU 5-4, however five defensive errors spelled doom for TU.
The same two teams will conclude their series on Monday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The games will be played at Charles Page High School Softball field.
