Hurricane Softball Team Splits With San Jose State

San Jose, Calif. - The University of Tulsa softball team split its Western Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at San Jose State, 6-0 and 1-0. It marked the fourth consecutive twinbill that the two teams had split, dating back to last season. In fact the 1998 season was the last time a team swept a series with SJSU taking three games from the Hurricane in San Jose, Calif.
Tulsa pounded out 10 hits in the first game of the day and the top four batters went 9-for-14 with two doubles, scoring all six of TU's runs. Sophomore Brandi McGuire provided the big bat, going 3-for-4 from the plate with a double and three RBI. Junior Jessie Smith scored three runs and stole a base.
Junior Jenny Magill allowed only two hits with no walks and struck out six. She did not allow a runner past first base, while recording her school record fifth shutout of the season. Magill now has 13 shutouts during her career.
Magill was looking for her 14th career shutout in the second game, until the Spartans scored the game winner with one out in the seventh inning.
In the inning, Spartan catcher Roxanne Staniorski began the inning with a bloop double to left field. Candice Akin then pinch ran for Staniorski and advanced to third on an Amy Walter sacrifice bunt. Ramos then singled up the middle to send Akin home for the winning run.
For the Hurricane, senior Kari Curtis went 3-for-3 from the plate with a walk. Tulsa outhit SJSU for the third time in the series, 7-6. However, TU stranded 10 baserunners.
Tulsa is now 12-33 on the season and 2-6 in the WAC. San Jose State is 24-33 and 5-7 in conference play.
The Golden Hurricane return home on Wednesday to host the defending national champion, Oklahoma, for a single contest at Charles Page High School Softball Field at 5 p.m.
