Tulsa and New Hampshire Women Open with a Draw

Burlington, Vt. - The New Hampshire and Tulsa women's soccer teams
played 120 minutes of soccer in their season openers, but a winner couldn't
be determined. The teams played to a 2-2 tie in the first game of the
Vermont Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Vermont at Centennial
Field this afternoon.
Tulsa (0-0-1) took an early 1-0 advantage on Melissa McCormick's (Omaha, NE) goal in the 14th minute of action. New Hampshire (0-0-1) answered in the 21st minute when Chiara Best (Rose Valley, PA) broke free from the Golden Hurricane defense and slipped the ball past Abby Fahrig (St. Charles, MO). The Wildcats tacked on another goal just before the half as Katie Sullivan (Worcester, MA) converted a cross from Farrell Swain (West Simsbury, CT) to put UNH up 2-1 at the break.
Tulsa fought back as McCormick netted her second goal of the afternoon on a scramble in front of the net in the 56th minute. But neither team could break the tie the rest of the way.
Fahrig finished the game with eight saves for Tulsa. She played the entire first half, but was replaced by Pam Devore (Derby, KS) in the second. However Devore suffered an injury just nine minutes into the second half and Fahrig returned for the remainder of the game. UNH's Kristen Ouellette (Weatogue, CT) registered five saves on the afternoon.
New Hampshire faces Sacred Heart on Sunday at noon on the second day of the Vermont Soccer Classic. Tulsa battles Vermont at 2:00pm.
