Softball Team to Host Winter Clinics

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball coaching staff will host a pair of clinics this month to help area youth learn more about the game of fastpitch softball.
The first clinic will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, at TU's Mabee Gym. The clinic will be seperated into two sessions, with the morning session concentrating on pitching from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. The second session will concentrate on catching from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Anyone 17 years-old and younger can partcipate in the clinic which costs $35. Participates need to bring tennis shoes, a glove and ball. All pitchers must provide their own catcher. All catchers must bring their own face mask, shin guards and chest protectors.
TU assistant coach Angela Geurin along with TU graduate assistant coach Kerri Cornwell will be heading the instruction. Geurin was an All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree for the Golden Hurricane as a first baseman and pitcher during her college career from 1995-98. She is either listed in the top-five or holds many TU career records, including career strikeouts, career shutouts and career earned run average. Cornwell, formaly Hasselbar, played for TU during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. She holds the school's fourth best career fielding percentage, the second best for a catcher.
The second clinic, on Saturday, Jan. 26, will focus on hitting. Lasting from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., this clinic will cost each participants a $45 fee. Anyone under the age of 17 may sign up for the clinic and will be required to bring tennis shoes, a bat and a batting helmet. Batting gloves are optional. Tulsa Sports Center, located on the corner of 21st St. and 129th Ave., will serve as host for the hitting clinic.
This is a basic fundamentals clinic. The coaching staff will demonstrate and teach drills that will help young athletes develop their swings. Participants will receive training in the areas of bat control, weight shifting, hip snap. The staff will also teach the basic fundamentals of the sacrifice bunt.
Youth may sign up the day of each clinic and are asked to arive at least 15 minutes before their particular session is to begin. Space is limited to 25 participants per session, so reservations are taken on a first come, first serve basis. Participants will also receive two free tickets to the softball team's home opening doubleheader against Bacone on Feb. 23rd at 1 p.m.
