Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa freshman Jamie German scored two goals, while classmate Kelly Wilson turned in a stellar performance in goal with a school-record 17 saves as the Golden Hurricane stunned Western Athletic Conference leader SMU, 2-1, at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
With the win, Tulsa improves to .500 on the season at 6-6-2 and 3-1-1 in WAC play, while SMU falls to 8-5-4 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play. The Mustangs suffered their first loss in league games this season. The victory for Tulsa was its first against SMU since a 1-0 triumph over the Mustangs 10 years ago in 1992.
Tulsa charged out of the gates early and nearly gained a quick lead barely three minutes into the game when freshman Danielle Fauteux beat SMU goalkeeper Erin McLeod to a free ball and a kicked a slow roller toward the open net. However, the ball rolled wide and just outside the right post. But, a little under two minutes later, senior Julie Twellman found German in the middle of the penalty box and German beat McLeod to the ball and kicked into an open net to give the Hurricane a 1-0 lead.
The score remained in TU's favor for over 70 minutes until Wilson broke from the net after a 50-50 ball and upended an SMU player while trying to save the ball. The Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick and Jill Heinemann converted the charity shot into SMU's first goal at 75:35, tying the game at 1-1.
A little over five minutes later, Tulsa regained the lead when junior Staci Morgan was fouled at the top of the penalty box and the Golden Hurricane was given a free kick from just outside the center of the penalty area. German, with a wall of players standing between her and a potential game-winning goal, calmly blasted a high shot to the top right of the box and into the back of the net at 80:58. With a 2-1 advantage, Wilson and the Hurricane defense turned back the Mustangs and TU players and fans stormed the field when the game ended.
SMU doubled upped the Hurricane in shot attempts for the game, 24-12, including 13-5 in the second half. Wilson came up with clutch saves time after time and reestablished the school record of 14 which was previously held by Melissa Mitchell against Texas in 1994.
