Softball Team Bounces Back For Consolation Championship

The University of Tulsa softball team certainly bounced back nicely from its first defeat of the season taking out frustration on Fordham and Southeastern Louisiana, 7-1 and 8-3, respectively. With the victories, TU wins the consolation championship.
Freshman Ami Day scattered five hits, allowing only one run while striking out six Fordham batters. She also recorded five assists defensively. Junior Crissy Strimple recorded three hits to lead a season-best 13-hit attack for Tulsa.
Fordham took a 1-0 lead after the first half inning. Tulsa quickly responed with three runs in the bottom of the first. Using three hits and three illegal pitches to take the lead for good. The Hurricane would add another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Strimple led four TU batters with multi-hit games. Seniors Jessie Smith and Mimi Randolph and junior Brandi McGuire had two hits apeice. Not one TU batter struck out.
Tulsa faced Southeastern Louisiana in the consolation championship game. Freshman Lindsey Dyer picked up her third win of the season with 4.2 innings of work. Senior Jenny Magill picked up the save by allowing only one hit in the final 2.1 innings.
After falling behind 4-0, SELU came back with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning. However, the Golden Hurricane slammed the door with a four run sixth inning.
Lindsey Dyer and Jessie Smith were both named to the all-tournament team. Dyer struck out 12 batters in 9.2 innings of work with two victories for an 0.72 ERA for the tournament. Smith recorded 12 hits, with two doubles and two homeruns for a .545 batting average in six games.
Tulsa will travel to Stillwater, Okla. on Friday afternoon for a 4 p.m. game with Oklahoma State. The Golden Hurricane will open the home portion of the schedule on Saturday against Bacone at The Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
