Tulsa Soccer Athletes Receive Verizon Academic All-District Honors

Tulsa, Oklahoma - A total of four student-athletes from the Tulsa men's and women's soccer teams have been selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District Men's and Women's Soccer Team. Senior Giancarlo Barzotti and junior Brent Salter were tabbed from the Tulsa men's team, while senior Melissa McCormick and junior Julie Twellman were named from the women's team. All four players are eligible for the national Academic All-America squad, which will be announced later this month.
Salter posted the best season of his three-year career at Tulsa with four shutouts, 86 saves and a 1.53 goals-against-average in 1,649 minutes. He started 18 games and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week after posting a shutout against Creighton, the 2000 NCAA National Runner-up. He was named to the 2001 Microtel Inn & Suites/Golden Hurricane Kickoff Classic all-tournament team and was selected to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. In 2000, Salter was an honorable mention all-MVC Scholar Athlete selection and was a member of the Verizon Academic All-District VI At-large First Team. A finance major and native of Conway, Ark., Salter is a three-year member of the TU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and has a 3.44 grade-point-average. TU completed the 2001 campaign with a 9-10 overall record.
Barzotti, a senior defender who started 4-of-10 games in 2001, is a two-time member of the MVC Scholar Athlete team. He helped TU post four shutouts in 2001 and concluded his career as a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter. Barzotti tallied one goal and one assist for three career points. He started 51 of 60 games and was a three-year member of the TU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and was selected to the 1999 Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., he sports a 3.53 GPA in international business.
McCormick concluded her career ranked seventh in goals (27), second in assists (18) and sixth in scoring (72). A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter, McCormick led Tulsa in scoring with a career-best nine goals and five assists for 23 points in 2001. She also tallied four-game-winning goals. A three-year member of the TU Athletic Director's Honor Roll, she was named to the 2000 Verizon Academic All-District VI At-Large First Team as a junior and is a four-year member of the all-WAC Academic squad. A management major from Omaha, Neb., McCormick holds a 3.81 GPA. She started 54 of 73 career games and led Tulsa to a 9-9-2 record in 2001.
Despite nagging injuries, Twellman started 13 of 16 games in 2001. Prior to 2001, she had led Tulsa in scoring as a freshman and sophomore. Twellman ranks ninth on TU's career goals list (21), 10th in assists (12) and in scoring (54). She was named to the Soccer Buzz Central Region Third Team as a sophomore and is a two-time selection to the all-WAC Second Team. A three-year member of the TU Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Twellman, a native of Columbia, Mo., was named to the 2000 Verizon Academic All District VI At-Large First Team in 2000. A three-year member of the all-WAC Honor Roll, she sports 3.94 GPA in communication.
