Rock Hill, S.C. - The University of Tulsa softball team improved to 25-2 on the season with a pair of victories in the 2002 Winthrop Invitational at Rock Hill, S.C. TU defeated host Winthrop 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh to start the day, then beat Michigan State 10-5 in the night cap.
Against Winthrop, senior Jenny Magill picked up her seventh shutout in 10 starts. Magill gave up only three hits in her ninth complete game of the season, while striking out seven Winthrop batters.
Offensively, senior Jessie Smith returned from an illness to go 2-of-3 with the game winning RBI. Freshman Stephanie Sliepen reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh with one out. She advanced to second following a single by sophomore Heather Hiar. She would score the game's only run on Smith's second hit of the day.
The win would tie the school record for victories with 24 on the season. The Hurricane would break that record with a 10-5, come-from-behind victory over Michigan State.
Freshman Ami Day put her undefeated record in jeopardy by giving up five runs on five hits and an error in the top half of the first to the Spartans. She would buckle-down and only allow only four hits the final six innings, walking none with one strikeout.
Not allowing the game to get out of hand, the Hurricane hitters scored five runs bottom half of the first inning also. Smith opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch, she would score on a Danielle Olsen double. Sliepen would close the first inning scoring, when she scored from first base on bases clearing double by Christy Watkins.
Tulsa would add two more runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the final margin. Olsen also hit her third home run of the season, giving Tulsa 18 on the season. The 1996 Golden Hurricane squad hit 21 home runs for the school record.
Day picked up her 10th win of the season against zero losses. In 67.2 innings pitched this season, Day has yet to give up a homerun as opposing batters are hitting .192 off her.
