Rock Hill, S.C. - The championship rounds of the 2002 Winthrop Invitational have been cancelled due to inclement weather.
The champions of the invitational have been awarded to the top team in each of the four pools. The first place teams and co-champions are as follows: Pittsburgh, Tulsa, St. John's and Illinois. Campbell actually finished Pool D undefeated, however is not allowed to play on Sundays, therefore had to pull out of the tournament. Thus the Illini were named champions of the pool with a 3-1 record, the only pool winner with a loss.
The Golden Hurricane have either won outright, or been named co-champions of all five tournaments this season. Tulsa had never won a tournament before in the program's history.
At 27-2, not only has TU broken the school record for wins in a season, it has also broken the school record for consecutive games won... twice. Starting the year off 8-0, broke the previous mark for consecutive games won of six, set in 1996. That was the same year the Golden Hurricane won 24 contests to set that mark.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, March 20, at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. The Hurricane will host Pittsburg State for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The Lady Gorillas are coached by former TU assistant Jenifer Wells.
