Softball Team Opens WAC Play with Sweep of Louisiana Tech

The University of Tulsa softball team recorded a pair of shutout victories over Louisiana Tech, 1-0 and 2-0, to open Western Athletic Conference season on Saturday evening at the Lady Techster Softball Complex in Ruston, La.
The first game went into extra innings before a winner was named in the pitching dual. Senior Jessie Smith opened the game with a single down the rightfield line. However TU would not record another hit until the top half of the ninth inning, as sophomore Lindsey Meadows handcuffed the WAC's best bats with 11 strikeouts and no walks in the complete game effort.
As good as Meadows was in the circle, it was a ninth inning wild pitch that supplied the game winner. Sophomore Heather Hiar led off the TU ninth with a single. Following a sarifice bunt, Hiar advanced to third on a Smith's second single of the game. Smith would steal second base just before Meadows' wild pitch that scored Hiar from third.
Senior Jenny Magill recorded her ninth shutout of the season in the complete game victory. The win tied her career best season win total of 10. Magill's three strikeouts came, despite not having more than two strikes called on any one batter.
Smith also picked up her WAC leading 14th stolen base of the season.
The second game was also a pitching dual, as neither team could score for the games first six innings. TU freshman Ami Day took a no hitter into the fifth inning before La. Tech would even record a hit. That would be the only hit the Lady Techsters would get as Day earned her 11th win of the season, while striking out four LTU batters.
After being held hitless during the first game, juniors Danielle Olsen and Crissy Strimple muscled out two hits apeice. Oleson also had a double and a run batted in during the nightcap.
The Golden Hurricane has won 19 consecutive games to improve its record to 29-2 on the season and 2-0 in the WAC. Louisiana Tech falls to 11-7 and 0-2 in the WAC.
Tulsa returns to the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 27 to host the No. 6th ranked University of Oklahoma in a single game at 5 p.m. TU will return to WAC play on Thursday, March 28 against Loyola Marymount at 5 p.m. Portland State will also come to town next week for a noon contest also at TU on Saturday, March 30.
