Tulsa, Okla. - The Golden Hurricane softball team earned a split with Portland State (losing 3-1 and winning 9-1), Saturday afternoon in Western Athletic Conference action at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.

The first game of the doubleheader did not start well for TU, as the Viking lead off hitter reached base on an error. That was just foreshadowing things to come. Senior pitcher Jenny Magill worked her way into and out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, only to do the same in the sixth inning as well. Not allowing a run either time as Portland State would strand seven base runners in the game.

With the game tied at 1-1, Monica Martell singled with one out followed by a Megumi Hackett walk. Nicole Ivie hit a two-out single to left field that scored Martell. However, sophomore Heather Hiar let the ball get past her and roll to the fence. Hackett scored from first just before Ivie was thrown out at third.

Three seperate players recorded hits for TU, Jessie Smith, Lindsey Dyer and Hiar. Magill threw her 13th complete game of the season, striking out five Viking batters and walking only two more.

Tulsa took advantage of six Porland State errors in game two, while also pounding out 10 hits. Junior Brandi McGuire along with Dyer led the TU offensive attack with two hits apeice. Smith along with Stacey Walkingstick, Crissy Strimple, Mimi Randolph, Ami Day and Kyla Malone also registered hits for TU.

Day pitched her 11th complete game of the season in 12 starts. She allowed only two hits, while striking out two batters as well.

Tulsa improves to 32-4 on the season 5-1 in the WAC. Portland State falls to 9-16, 3-5 in the WAC. The Hurricane now travel West for a pair of WAC doubleheaders. On Thursday, Tulsa faces nationally ranked Fresno State in a 6:00 p.m. start in Fresno, Calif. On Saturday, Tulsa travels to San Jose, Calif., to face the Spartans of San Jose State in a doubleheader scheduled to start a noon.

The Golden Hurricane will return home on April 13th to face Centenary College in a 4 p.m., non-conference doubleheader.
