Softball Earns Second WAC Split of the Week

Portland, Ore. - The University of Tulsa softball team did something on Saturday that only two other teams had done in the programs ten year history, win eight conference games. After losing game one, 2-0, the Golden Hurricane bounced back to win game two, 3-1. The win gave TU eight wins in Western Athletic Conference play this season.
As a member of the the Missouri Valley Conference, the 1995 TU squad went 8-12 in league play. The 1998 team was a second-year member fo the WAC when it also won eight games in league play going 8-22.
Portland State extended their season-high winning streak to five games, in large part thanks to a strong pitching performance by Morgan Seibert. The junior right-hander allowed only two hits while striking out eight TU batters.
Senior Jenny Magill suffered the loss, only her sixth of the season. Magill scattered six hits, walked one and struck out two in her 18th complete game of the season.
The second game was another pitcher's duel through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, freshman Holly Reynolds led off the inning by reaching on an error. Sophomore Heather Hiar followed with a single to give TU a pair of base runners. Following a pair of fielder's choice outs, junior Crissy Strimple send her seventh home run of the season over the left field fence to give TU a 3-0 lead.
Portland State would cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly. However, the Vikings could get no closer.
Tulsa improves to 39-12 on the season, 8-6 in WAC play. Portland State falls to 16-23, 6-8 in WAC play.
The Golden Hurricane return to the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex, kicking off an eight-game homestand on Tuesday, April 23, against Pittsburg State. The non-conference doubleheader with the Gorillas is set to begin at 5 p.m.
