Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team capsulized its season in two games on Tuesday night against Pittsburg State at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex in Tulsa, Okla. In the first game, the Golden Hurricane scratched out a run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to win 1-0. In the nightcap, Tulsa exploded for a school record 17 hits in a 12-1 victory.

In a good-old fashion pitchers duel, PSU's Michelle Martinez and TU's Lindsey Dyer combined to strikeout 13 batters and walked only two. The two teams only recorded two hits apeice through the first five innings of the contest.

Tulsa broke open the scoreless tie in the sixth inning. Following a one-out double by freshman Stacey Walkingstick, junior Danielle Olsen reached safely on a fielding error by Gorilla shortstop Brigette Hull. Senior Jessie Smith singled through the leftside to score Walkingstick with the game winning run.

Dyer improved to 9-1 on the season in her sixth shutout of the season while allowing two hits and striking out five batters. Smith picked up two of TU's four hits, as well as stealing two bases. Sophomore Heather Hiar and Walkingstick also recorded hits for the Hurricane.

Tulsa picked up where it left off in the second game, scoring five runs in the first inning. Freshman Stephanie Sliepen jump started the TU offense with a one-out triple just off the centerfielder's glove. The triple was one of eight extra-base hits for TU, another single game school record. Sliepen would score on an Olsen sacrifice fly.

A single through the left side by Chrissy Strimple, kept the inning alive. Smith extended her hitting streak to 12 games with a single giving TU a pair of runners with two outs. Walkingstick doubled down the left field line to score both Strimple and Smith. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, she would score on Brandi McGuire's third home run of the season. McGuire's long ball just squeezed inside the left field foul pole.

Tulsa would add four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to extend the lead to 12-0. The Gorillas scored their lone run on a two-out bases loaded wild pitch in the top of the fifth.

While the 17 hits were a single game best, the 12 runs were the most scored in one game by a TU team since a 13-2 victory at the end of the 1999 season. They were also the third-most runs scored by a TU squad in a single game. The Hurricane defeated Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, 15-4 during the 1996 season.

Day improves to 16-5 on the season in her 19th complete game of the season. She struck out six batters, while scattering six hits. Day also went 1-for-1 from the plate with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base.

Sliepen and McGuire led the TU offensive hit parade with three hits apeice, while Malone and Smith recorded two hits each as well. Malone, 2-for-2, also had four runs batted in and one run scored.

Tulsa continues its homestand with a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against San Jose State on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m. Nationally-ranked Fresno State then comes to Tulsa on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
