Tulsa, Okla. - A water logged field and the longest timeout of the season did not stop The University of Tulsa softball team on Friday morning. The Golden Hurricane concluded its contest with San Jose State, which began at 6:45 p.m., on Thursday night with a 3-2 victory- Friday morning.
After a short discussion between games Thursday night, the coaches and umpires agreed to start the second game of the doubleheader. The Spartans were able to record a hit in the top of the first, as Becca Baldridge singled to right field. However the score remained scoreless until the second inning.
Tulsa senior Jessie Smith extended her hitting streak to 14 games, as she led the second inning off with a bunt single. After she stole second, Smith scored on a single by Ami Day. With one out, Mimi Randolph reached on a fielder's choice as Gonzales double pumped on a throw to second base attempting to force out Day. However, the throw hit the dirt short of the bag allowing Day to reach second safely on the error. That is when San Jose State coach Dee Dee Enabenter-Omidiji felt the conditions were not safe to play. Following a 15-minute discussion, as the rain continued and field conditions worsened, the game was suspended.
At 9 a.m., Friday morning, the game was continued with TU at bat, having one out and runners at first and second. Two pitches later, the Hurricane was out of the inning.
TU woke the bats up for the third inning, however, scoreing two runs on three consecutive hits. Freshman Stacey Walkingstick started the inning with a single through the left side. Junior Danielle Olsen followed with a single up the middle. Fellow junior Crissy Strimple doubled to right center field to score both Walkingstick and Olsen. One pitching change and a ground out later, senior Mimi Randolph walked to load the bases. However, Tulsa could not score anymore runs.
The Spartans added more drama to the game, as SJSU scored two runs in the sixth inning. However, Tulsa buckled down to hold San Jose State scoreless in the final inning and two-thirds. Freshman Ami Day picked up her 17th win of the season against six losses.
Weather permitting, the Golden Hurricane will continue its homestand with a double against nationally ranked Fresno State. The Bulldogs, No. 13 in the latest NFCA poll are also ranked second in the West region. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
