Softball Splits with San Jose State

San Jose, Calif. - The University of Tulsa softball team split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with San Jose State on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 4-1 and losing game two, 2-1 at the SJSU Field in San Jose Calif.
The Golden Hurricane scored early in the first game in the opening stanza as freshman Stephanie Sliepen singled up the middle then stole second. She would score on a Danielle Olsen's single.
Tulsa would pick up two more runs in top of the fifth, as freshman Holly Reynolds opened the inning with a infield hit. After advancing to second on a Jessie Smith sacrafice. Reynolds scored on an error by the catcher, Shannon Anderson. Sliepen who reached on an fielder's choice, stole her second base of the game. She later scored on a wild pitch.
After giving up a run in the top half of the inning, the Spartans came back to score their only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Jenny Magill pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits, picked up her 13th win of the season. The victory tied Krystal Markwardt for the most wins in a single season. Freshman Lindsey Dyer pitched the final two innings for her first collegiate save.
Sliepen led the offensive attack for the Hurricane, with two hits, two steals and a double. Olsen, Brandi McGuire, Stacey Walkingstick and Reynolds also recorded hits for TU.
The second game started out as a pitchers dual as only two hits were recorded by either team in the first five innings. Spartan pitcher Carol Forbes kept the Hurricane bats at bay by not allowing a hit until the sixth inning.
Senior Jessie Smith recorded TU's first hit with one out in the sixth with a single to center field. After she stole second, Walkingstick walked to give Tulsa two base runners. Olsen sinlged to leftfield scoring Smith. However, Tulsa would not be able to get anymore runs across the plate.
The Spartans opened the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles. Stefanie McMinn singled to left field followed by Jana Arde's single down the left field line. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. San Jose State scored a pair of unearned runs following a pair of errors by Olsen.
Freshman Ami Day scattered five hits while striking out five Spartan batters in the loss. Five different Hurricane batters recorded hits. Smith, Olsen, Dyer, Reynolds and Mimi Randolph all reached base by hitting singles.
Tulsa improves to 33-7 on the season and 6-4 in WAC play. San Jose State finishes the day at 16-32, 4-8 in the WAC.
The Hurricane now travels to Fayetteville, Ark., on Wednesday for The Border War. Tulsa faces Oklahoma State at 5 p.m. and Arkansas at 7 p.m., with OSU and the Lady Razorbacks playing each other at 3 p.m. On Thursday, Tulsa will travel to Springfield, Mo., to play a double header with Southwest Missouri State.
TU will return to the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Saturday, April 13th. The Golden Hurricane will host Centenary in a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m.
